Higurashi no Naku koro Ni (ひぐらしのなく頃 ) can also count, but I found Elfen Lied more of a struggle to watch at some points. AKIRA (アキラ) is the bloodiest anime film I’ve ever watched, and it was also my favorite childhood movie. (I remember the ending traumatizing me as a kid; Tetsuo’s transformation, oh gosh)
As for bloodiest manga, oh man, the list goes on. Lots of guro-manga’s have terrified me, but I think one manga that got me no sleep was Mai-chan’s Daily Life (まいちゃんの日常). Dear lord, I suggest you don’t read that one. Waita Uziga is one serious weirdo.
